Spring is just around the corner here in the Northern Chicago area. At Lindemann Chimney Service, we’ve got you covered. Literally. The best way to keep animals out of the chimney is with chimney caps. We have caps stocked and ready to install in black galvanized, stainless steel and copper finishes. If you desire a unique cap to blend with the architecture of your home we can order a customized cap to blend with your home’s features.
The best time to install a chimney cap is right now. Animals will soon be looking for warm places to nest. Chimneys provide a warm, quiet nesting spot. Many animals used to nest in hollow trees but with timber being cleared and homes being built farther out, less of these hollow trees are available. Instead these critters will be taking a good look at your chimney. A chimney cap with a spark screen prevents animals from entering the flue.
Chimney caps also help prevent the entry of rain, snow, debris and the spark arrestor helps prevent sparks from traveling. If you have a fireplace a chimney cap/damper combination will take you one step further. A chimney top damper cap, such as the Energy Top Damper, will also create a seal on your chimney, keeping “paid” heated and air-conditioned air in your home (see below). This saves you money and will pay for itself within 2-5 years and will prevent moisture entry from the open flue from damaging your chimney.
