Do you have a dirty fireplace?  Is soot stains and ash buildup making your unit not only unsightly to look at but also dangerous to use?  A filthy fireplace is not only an eye sore but can also be a health hazard for your family.  Fortunately, there are some easy tasks you can complete yourself to maintain a tidier (and safer) fireplace.

Clean Fire PlaceHere is a step-by-step guide to safely cleaning your dirty fireplace.

    • Step 1:  Clear the Ash – After ash has been allowed to cool for at least 4 days, use a wet/dry vacuum with a disposable bag to remove all the debris from the area.  If you don’t have a vacuum, place wet coffee grounds on the area to dampen the ash before shoveling it into a metal bucket or container for disposal later.

    • Step 2:  Clean the Glass – To clean cloudy glass, use a solution of half warm water and half vinegar.  Spray the solution onto a rag or paper towel and add a minor abrasive such as some leftover ash to gently scrub the area.  Then wipe clean with a damp microfiber cloth.

    • Step 3:  Remove Stains from Surrounds – If the surrounds are constructed of brickwork, first spray the bricks with water.  This keeps the cleaning solution from soaking into the surface too fast.  Then mix 1/4 cup all-purpose cleaner to one gallon of water.  With a stiff brush, apply the solution to the brick fronts scrubbing as you go.  Marble and other stones require a milder solution of dishwashing liquid and water.  Once the stains have been removed, rinse the area thoroughly and allow the area to dry completely before starting another fire.

A quality commercial cleaner can also be used on stubborn stains or buildup.

To maintain a healthy and clean unit, it is also important to arrange regular service for your chimney and fireplace.  This includes scheduling an annual inspection and cleaning by a certified professional.  Keeping you and your family safe, this also removes harmful creosote which buildups on the chimney walls.
